Sapphire is a precious gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum. In the Middle Ages, the name sapphire was understood to mean what we today know as lapis lazuli. After 1800 it was recognized that sapphire is a gem variety of corundum.

The name of this corundum stone comes from Greek word „sappheiros“. Throughout the history Sapphires have been associated with royalty. Large sapphires are very rare. Some of them are very famous like the "Star of India", probably the largest cut star sapphire in the world (536ct), owned by The American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Where is Sapphire found?

For more then 2000 years sapphires was found on many locations around the world. Today most important mining locations for sapphires are Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Australia and Thailand. Significant sapphire deposits are also in Brazil, Cambodia, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania and Vietnam.

Most famous sapphire mining areas are Mogok of Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
