What is Gold Vermeil?
Hello everyone!
Hope you're doing well. We just start our new special series of blogs about jewellery materials and components which we use in production of our spectacular jewellery.
In first blog we will go more into details about one of the most important metal materials which we use in our jewellery - this is GOLD VERMEIL. Enjoy the content :)
GOLD VERMEIL
Gold Vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is the premium type of gold-finished jewellery made with a thick layer of pure gold. This is production technique where gold is applied to sterling silver and its originating from France in the 19th century, where it was used for crafting jewellery and decorative luxury products.
Gold Vermeil jewellery is crafted by electroplating a layer of gold (minimum 2.5 microns thick with a minimum gold purity of 10 but mostly 14, 18 or 22 karats) onto a sterling silver base.
What is difference between Gold Vermeil vs Gold Plated?
Gold Vermeil is made in a similar style to gold plating but requires a thicker layer of gold. Jewellery made by gold vermeil technique contains a significantly high amount of gold and a thicker layer, gold plating has a much thinner coating. Also gold plated jewellery usually have cheaper base metal like brass, but on the other side for gold vermeil jewellery base metal is always sterling silver or pure silver.
Very important is also that gold vermeil is regulated by the standards that ensure luxurious finish, durability and hypoallergenic quality.
Conclusion
Gold Vermeil jewellery is the perfect combination between luxury and affordability. All such jewellery have better quality with quality base metal and gold coating.
